As a startup, you will no doubt have a hundred pressing tasks to fulfil at any given moment. But you should be careful not to neglect your brand. If you own, run or work in a startup business, then you’ll want to ensure that you present your brand and service in the best light possible. Logo design is a critical first step to get right for all startups because it tells the world who you are and what your brand is about. So how do you go about designing a logo for your startup company?
Figure out what your brand stands for
Before you go about picking colours, designs and fonts, you’ll want to know exactly what your brand stands for. This is easier than it sounds. Many brands struggle to pinpoint exactly what their brand stands for. While they may know why the ins and outs of the service they provide, attributing brand values can be a more difficult task. To figure this out it’s worth asking yourself the following questions
- Why did you start your business?
- Who do you help?
- How do you help them?
- Why is this help of value?
- What makes what you do different?
Once you have answered some of these questions you should be further along to defining what your brand stands for. Your answers to these questions can help to create the building blocks to your logo. Are you loud and fun or subtle and tasteful? Do you value excellent customer service? Maybe you pride your startup on the quality you provide or maybe what makes you stand out is innovation.
Put your customers at the heart of your logo design
Without customers then you don’t have a business. Any attempt at understanding what your brand stands for should, therefore, put your customers at the heart of everything you do. What makes your brand valuable to your customers? Is their opinion of your startup different to yours? Many brands get so tied up in their vision of the brand that they can lose sight of what the customer thinks. If you can, why not talk to your customers and ask them some questions? You may be surprised by their answers.
What makes you stand out from the crowd?
As a startup, you’ll have a good idea of where your product or service fits in the market. No doubt this will have been front of mind when thinking of taking the plunge into business. What is it that makes your brand different from those other companies? You may have something that is genuinely innovative. Maybe there is a process that you apply to your service that makes what you do that little bit more special. Or maybe it is simply in the quality of care that you provide. Whatever it is that makes you stand out from other brands out there, figure it out and make sure that you incorporate it into your logo design.
Keep it simple and distinctive
The best logos tend to be simple ones. Logos are more about giving a feel or taster of what your brand is about. Not spelling it out. While your logo should aspire to all of your brand values, you don’t need to throw the book at it. Choose your colours and fonts to suit what you feel your brand is about and try to reduce the noise in your logo design as much as possible.
Hire a professional
As logos tend to be quite simple designs it can be easy to underestimate the skill involved in creating a good one. Creating a great logo can take years of training and practice before you get the skill just right. And even then it is not something that is created in a flash. Designing a great logo takes time and patience as well as a good degree of skill and knowledge.
